Earthy Mid-century Living Room
In this project, I redesigned a living room for a middle-aged couple in Southern California. The client's functional and and aesthetic desires were met through the use of mid century modern-inspired design style and principles.
First year, Spring semester, Suffolk University MAIA Program

This living room design draws inspiration from mid-century modern and Japanese modernist styles to reflect the Southern California landscape and create a room that serves both as an entertainment and hosting space as well as a space to unplug. Like the climate, the style of the room will feel open and airy. Stone materials will mimic the rocky landscape of California. Windows will be made floor-to-ceiling so that the line between the indoor living room and the outdoor terrace is blurred, and two of the window panels will swing open to access the terrace. Colored glass and transparent fabrics will be used for light fixtures and drapery to create the appearance of foliage and allow as much light as possible to penetrate the space. The color palette, shapes, and some of the materials that will be used in this room can be found in nature. The use of biophilic design will allow for some pieces to shine as more elegant and formal while others subconsciously connect the client to nature. The mid-century modern characteristics of this living room will be obvious in the large windows, the open floor plan, the fireplace as the focal point of the room, the use of woods, and the style of furniture such as the coffee table, armchair, and bed swing.
